What is BETA?

The Bahamas Engineering and Technology Advancement Camp or BETA Camp is a summer engineering camp focused on increase the awareness and exposure of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) to young Bahamians. This is done through an immersive week long experience of hands-on and project-based learning taught by professional engineers. The target group is junior high school students, that have completed grades 7-12 and ages 11-16.

Through BETA Camp we expose students to multiple engineering disciplines through an in-depth curriculum hoping to inspire and develop the next generation of scientists and engineers.

STEM Introduction Students are immersed in the sciences from day one with specific training in a largely popular field taught by experienced engineers and scientists.

Field Trips Along with training in a specific STEM field, the students will be treated to a field-trip where they will get to tour a facility highlighting the stream of their choice.

Project Planning Students work together throughout the camp combining what they’ve learnt as well as what they know in order to produce a viable product that meets the challenge set forth at the begginning of the camp.

Our Students BETA provides a progressive learning environment where students can be comfortable in their thirst for knowledge while encouraging healthy social interactions.

Who Are We?

Collectively the BETA team is comprised of individuals who are deeply passionate about BETA for several reasons. Firstly, they realized it was only by chance that they entered into engineering because the exposure to it was lacking throughout their primary and secondary education. Secondly, they all love what they do as engineers realizing that engineering in tandem with innovation is constantly changing the world around us for the better. Lastly, many of them have been involved in engineering outreach programs outside of the Bahamas and know that this sort of programming can increase the number of individuals graduating with engineering degrees and entering the workforce both at home and globally. Hence, after three months of planning BETA and BETA Camp was established.

Meet the Whole Team

The Founders

BETA as an organization was co-founded by engineers Trenicka Rolle and D’André Wilson-Ihejirika in March 2014. They had both been involved in organizing engineering outreach programs in the US and Canada, respectively, and were looking to make a similar impact at home. When the two realized that their passions and interest aligned, they immediately decided to take action. D’André and Trenicka then worked to recruit other Bahamian engineers and like-minded individuals to join their team.

Mission

The BETA team’s mission is to use technical expertise to inspire and improve the Bahamas through a series of collaborative efforts that will strengthen STEM education across the nation, create opportunities for engineers and address vital infrastructure issues on our Bahama Islands.

The BETA team seeks to create a future where Bahamians are technically equipped to compete in a global market.
